Emergency Contraception Information
There are two types of emergency contraception, emergency coil or emergency pills.
- The most effective form of emergency contraception is the emergency coil.
- Emergency contraception pills work best the sooner you take them. Some types can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex.
I have been sexually exposed to HIV and need PEP
For PEP, you can walk-in to our Buryfields (Guildford) or Earnsdale (Redhill) clinics during the times listed below. Please be aware that waiting times may vary.
PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure.
We are closed on weekends, bank holidays and the first and third Wednesday afternoon of each month from 1pm.
Alternatives: walk-in centres or A&E. If you have a needlestick injury please contact your workplace occupational health team or attend A&E, we do not provide this service.

I have been Sexually Assaulted
If you have been sexually assaulted don't be afraid to get help.
You don't have to report the assault to the police if you don't want to. However, you should consider getting medical help as soon as possible for any injuries and because you may be at risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections (STI’s).
If you want the crime to be investigated, the sooner a forensic medical examination takes place, the better. We are unable to collect forensic evidence within our services and would advise if you wish to have a forensic examination to contact the centres below or the police as soon as you are able.
Where to get help
- The Solace Centre - sexual assault referral centre (SARC) offers free support and practical help to anyone in Surrey who has experienced sexual violence and/or sexual abuse.
- Male Sexual Assault Support (MSAS)is a male-specific project working to support men and boys who have experienced sexual assault/abuse.

If you do not wish to attend a SARC or MSAS we would advise that you attend our service as soon as possible. So, we can assess you for any immediate sexual health care that you require. Condoms are the method of contraception that prevents sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy.

If you have no symptoms you can request an online kit posted to your home address, attend a young people’s clinic or book a clinic appointment in our general service.
Online Testing
These services are for patients with no symptoms and is restricted by your postcode of residence. If you are not a Surrey resident then you should be able to order an online kit from your county of residency. If your Surrey postcode is not accepted, or you do not wish to have it delivered to your home address or if you have had difficulty using the kit you can make a clinic appointment.
Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea Online Testing
If you have no symptoms and aged under 25 years old you can request an online kit for chlamydia and gonorrhoea posted to your home address.

A subdermal implant is a long acting reversible method of contraception (LARC).

I would like a Coil fitted or replaced
Prior to booking a Coil appointment for a fitting you will first need to attend a coil assessment appointment.
Coils are very effective at preventing pregnancy. Before booking your appointment please watch the short video about Coils (intrauterine contraception) and read the accompanying information on the CNWL website.
Please do not book an appointment until you have attended for a Coil assessment if:
- you are aged 17 years old or under
- have complex medical or gynaecological problems e.g. fibroids
- have had coil complications, including previous difficult fittings
- think you may be pregnant
Do NOT book a fitting appointment if:
- you just need your coil removed or,
- you have had sex without using an effective method of contraception in the last 21 days
If there is any risk of pregnancy, then a coil will not be fitted on the day. If you already have a coil, please use a condom or avoid sex for at least one week before the appointment.
If you currently have a Mirena please note it can now be used as contraception for eight years.
Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and allow up to two hours for the duration of your visit.

These appointments are for a coil assessment. The staff will assess your suitability for a coil and refer you to an appropriate fitter dependant on your medical needs, the fitting will take place at another appointment. If a coil is not suitable for you they will advise on alternative contraception.
You can either have this assessment done via a telephone contraception appointment or in a clinic appointment.
If you think you may be pregnant you will need to attend for a clinic appointment.

Coils are very effective at preventing pregnancy. Before booking your appointment please watch the short video about Coils (intrauterine contraception) and read the accompanying information on the CNWL website.
Please do not book an appointment until you have attended for a Coil assessment if you:
- have complex medical or gynaecological problems e.g. fibroids
- have had coil complications, including previous difficult fittings
- think you may be pregnant
Do NOT book a fitting appointment if:
- you just need your coil removed, or
- you have had sex without using an effective method of contraception in the last 21 days
If there is any risk of pregnancy, then a coil will not be fitted on the day. If you already have a coil, please use a condom or avoid sex for at least one week before the appointment.
If you currently have a Mirena please note it can now be used as contraception for eight years.

I am 55 years or older or require Hormone Replacement Therapy
This service is funded to provide contraception care for people at risk of unplanned pregnancy. This service unfortunately is unable to provide hormone replacement therapy (HRT) including contraception for those 55 years or older.
This includes fitting a new coil or replacing a coil for HRT purposes, for example replacing a Mirena coil at 5 years for HRT purposes as the Mirena coil provides eight years of contraception cover.
If you require HRT then please contact your GP.

I would like a coil – I have had a failed or difficult coil insertion in the past, have fibroids, other gynaecological conditions or I think I may be pregnant
These appointments are for a coil assessment. The staff will assess your suitability for a coil and refer you to an appropriate fitter dependant on your medical needs, the fitting will take place at another appointment. If a coil is not suitable for you they will advise on alternative contraception.
We are unable to provide coils for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) or for non-contraceptive purposes. Please contact your GP.
You can either have this assessment done via a telephone contraception appointment or in a clinic appointment.
If you think you may be pregnant you will need to attend for a clinic appointment.
These appointments are with a contraceptive nurse and can generally be booked up to two weeks in advance.

I would like a Coil fitted or replaced
Coils are very effective at preventing pregnancy. Before booking your appointment please watch the short video about Coils (intrauterine contraception) and read the accompanying information on the CNWL website.
We are unable to provide coils for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) or for non-contraceptive purposes. Please contact your GP.
Please do not book an appointment until you have attended for a Coil assessment if you:
- have complex medical or gynaecological problems e.g. fibroids
- have had coil complications, including previous difficult fittings
- think you may be pregnant
Do NOT book a fitting appointment if:
- you just need your coil removed, or
- you have had sex without using an effective method of contraception in the last 21 days
If there is any risk of pregnancy, then a coil will not be fitted on the day. If you already have a coil, please use a condom or avoid sex for at least one week before the appointment.
If you currently have a Mirena please note it can now be used as contraception for eight years.
Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and allow up to two hours for the duration of your visit.

We recommend testing and using condoms until you have received your results
There are three ways that you can get tested (1) online, (2) reception kit or (3) clinic appointment
On-line Testing
For those with no symptoms you can request an online kit posted to your home address.
This service is restricted by your postcode of residence. If you are not a Surrey resident then you should be able to order an on-line kit from your county of residency.
Reception Kit
If your Surrey postcode is not accepted, or if you do not wish to have it delivered to your home address: Surrey residents can also collect the kit from the reception desk at the clinics below Monday 9am-4.30pm, Tuesday 9am-3pm, Wednesday 9am-1pm, Thursday 9am-6.30pm, Friday 9am-4.30pm.
