This page provides key information to help you prepare for an intrauterine contraception (Coil) fitting which is a long-acting, reversible contraception method.
Mirena/Levosert Update: Both are effective for 8 years for contraception (or until age 55 if fitted after age 45). Read FSRH statement: Extended use of all 52mg LNG-IUDs for up to eight years for contraception (May 2024) | FSRH
Steps to Follow
1. Watch the IUC video
It covers key risks and steps to prevent pregnancy before your fitting.
2. Ensure No Pregnancy Risk
- Using a hormonal method? Your fitting can happen anytime
- Using condoms? Ensure you use consistently for at least 3 weeks prior to your appointment
- Using intrauterine contraception? Also use condoms for 7 days prior to your appointment.
- Expired coils or implants should not be relied on for contraception
3. On the Day
Arrive 15 minutes early. The procedure can last up to two hours. Eat before, take pain relief, avoid driving, and bring sanitary protection. Avoid bringing children unless someone is available to supervise.
