HIV Prevention and PrEP Information for Black African Communities
People of Black African ethnicity are the second most impacted group by HIV in the UK. We now have a game-changing medication called PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) available free on the NHS which protects HIV-negative people from contracting HIV if they come into contact with the virus. PrEP works in the same way as medications people take to protect them from malaria, and is started before any potential exposures to HIV. PrEP has made a big contribution to reducing the number of new HIV diagnoses in the UK, but unfortunately, very few heterosexuals of Black African ethnicity are currently benefitting from it. With this in mind, CNWL worked with community partners Umoja Health Forum and Embrace UK Community Support Centre to co-design a new HIV prevention resource specifically for Black African communities.
The resource provides information about HIV and how it’s transmitted, HIV testing, PrEP, PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis), and condoms. The resource was designed based on inputs from over one hundred people from Black African communities living and working in our boroughs of Camden, Islington, Haringey and Barnet. PrEP is currently only available from sexual health clinics. To book a PrEP appointment please click here.
Booking an appointment to test for HIV and sexually transmitted infections
One of the easiest ways to test for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections is to book an appointment at your local sexual health clinic. All our clinic appointments are bookable online here.
To help you find the right appointment for you we’ve created an online tool that will ask you a few questions about yourself and your needs, after which you’ll be offered a list of clinics where you can book your appointment.
Useful information to know about NHS sexual health clinics is that they are:
- Free: You won't pay anything for appointments
- Confidential: What you say in the clinic stays there, except in cases where you or another person are at risk of harm
- Separate from other parts of the NHS: Sexual health patient records are secure and separate from your other records, such as one held by your GP
- Open to all: Regardless of UK residency or immigrant status - everyone is welcome
