World-first Gonorrhoea vaccine programme launches – ITV visits CNWL’s Mortimer Market Service
4 August 2025
CNWL’s Mortimer Market Centre featured on ITV News this week as part of the national rollout of a world-first routine gonorrhoea vaccination programme across England.
The new programme offers free vaccination to people most at risk of gonorrhoea, including gay and bisexual men with a recent history of STIs.
The vaccine – 4CMenB – is already used to protect against meningococcal B disease and has been shown to reduce gonorrhoea cases by up to 40%.
Gonorrhoea is the second most commonly diagnosed STI in England. Left untreated, it can cause serious health issues. With cases at record highs—over 85,000 in 2023—the introduction of this vaccine is a crucial step forward in tackling the growing threat of antibiotic resistance.
Dr Harry Coleman, Consultant, Sexual Health and HIV Medicine said: “We’ve seen very increasing numbers of Gonorrhoea diagnosis in England. In 2023 was the highest we’ve seen so far of 85,000 cases in England which is three times higher than we saw in 2012.”

The vaccination is now being offered in sexual health clinics across England, including Mortimer Market and Archway Centre, and is free for eligible individuals.
